Movin’ on Up at Arlington

With Arlington International Racecourse celebrating the 25th anniversary of the current grandstand’s unveiling I thought it might be a good time to reflect on my nearly two decades as a member of the Arlington family.

As a youth I spent a great deal of time at the old Arlington Park with my father.  I learned to read the Daily Racing Form at an age that probably upset my mother as well as my grammar school teachers – but a life-long love of the track began.

I got my first job here in 1986 – the year after the old grandstand had burned to the ground – as a member of Guest Relations staff (aka “red coat”).  I was in college at the time so my summers were free and clear.  It wasn’t too long after that Bob Wolff, then the Director of Publicity, tasked me with manning the backside Press Center during Million Week in 1987.

Two years later, when the track re-opened I became a member of the communications department and have gradually ascended the ranks to my current position as Senior Manager of Communications.

Along the way I have been privileged to witness Cigar’s 16th straight victory when capturing the Arlington-Citation Challenge in 1996 as well as countless Arlington Millions and International Festivals.  It was a great thrill to be part of the 19th Breeders’ Cup World Championships when the event was held here in 2002.

I have been fortunate since 2006 to be part of the Notes Team for the Breeders’ Cup and more recently the editor for the Notes Team for the Dubai World Cup which has allowed me to see some of the best horses from both sides of the Atlantic.

I can hardly wait to see what is next in store here with another Million and International Festival just a short time down the road.
