Alex Solis was born on March 25, 1964, in Panama City, Panama. He attended a jockey school in his homeland and won his first race there in 1981. After arriving in the United States, Solis gained prominence when he won the 1986 Preakness (G1) aboard Snow Chief; he again made headlines in 1996 when he rode Dare and Go to upset Cigar in the Pacific Classic (G1), ending Cigar's 16-race winning streak. He has also ended other notable winning streaks, piloting Victory Gallop to victory in the 1998 Arkansas Derby (G2), ending Favorite Trick's nine-race undefeated streak, and Got Koko to defeat Azeri and ending that champion's 11-race win streak. His biggest wins to date have come aboard Pleasantly Perfect when he won the Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).
