David Donk was involved in horse racing from an early age as his father owned and raced horses at Finger Lakes from the time Donk was eight years old. He took out his trainer's license in 1980 at Finger Lakes and went on to take a job as an assistant to the legendary Woody Stephens in 1984. He stayed with the Hall of Fame trainer until 1991.
