Joseph O’Brien was born May 23, 1993. He is the eldest son of Irish champion trainers Aidan and Annemarie. He has established himself as an integral part of the Ballydoyle operation.
O’Brien enjoyed his first winner on board Johann Zoffany, trained by his father, at Leopardstown on May 28, 2009, and was joint champion apprentice in a three-way tie with Ben Curtis and Gary Carroll in 2010.
He earned his first Classic success on Roderic O’Connor in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. He also had his first ride in the Derby, partnering Memphis Tennessee to finish fourth, and took third on St Nicholas Abbey in the Group I King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July 2011.
His major international wins include: Racing Post Trophy (Camelot 2011, Kingsbarns 2012); Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Excelebration 2012); Grand Prix de Paris (Imperial Monarch 2012); Irish Derby (Camelot 2012); Prince of Wales’s Stakes (So You Think 2012); Epsom Derby (Camelot 2012); Coronation Cup (St Nicholas Abbey 2012); Tattersalls Gold Cup (So You Think 2012); Irish 2000 Guineas (Power 2012); Breeders’ Cup Turf (St Nicholas Abbey 2011); Weatherbys Insurance £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes (Reply 2011); Moyglare Stud Stakes (Maybe 2011); Irish 2,000 Guineas (Roderic O’Connor 2011).
