Leonard Leveen and Michael P. Shanley
Leonard Leveen has been a partner in various real estate projects in upstate New York. He has residences in New York and Florida. At one time, Leveen raced Standardbreds in New York. In addition to owning horses with Michael Shanley, he has owned horses with Anthony Margotta and Michael Kelly.
Michael Shanley was born Dec. 11, 1946, in Johnson City, N.Y. He is one of 10 partners in Pyramid Companies of Syracuse, N.Y., one of the Northeast's largest developers of shopping centers. Pyramid developed the Carousel Center in Syracuse and Crossgates Mall in Albany, each encompassing 1.5-million square feet. Shanley graduated from Villanova and Albany Law School and is a practicing attorney specializing in real estate development.
Shanley has served as a first Vice President of the New York Thoroughbred Horseman’s Association, and has worked as an attorney, judge and real estate executive in the Albany area over the last 35 years. His legal background combined with his extensive experience working with the New York State Legislature in Albany has been put to use by the NYTHA on legislative matters. Since being elected to the NYTHA Board in 1999, Mike has served as Vice President of NYTHA and Chairman of the Legislative Committee
He and his wife, Lyn, who grew up in Iowa, are involved in all aspects of the horse industry, after getting involved nearly two decades ago with shares of racehorses. A standout for the Shanleys was Whitmore’s Conn, who won seven of 28 starts and banked nearly $750,000. Among his victories was the G1 Sword Dancer Invitational in 2003.
