William I. Mott

Bill Mott was born on July 29, 1953 and resides in Saratoga Springs, New York. Bill owned and trained his first horse named My Assets at the age of 15. He won his first race with this mare who he purchased for $320. Before he graduated high school, he had won the South Dakota Futurity with Kosmic Tour. He worked for Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg for three years and gained valuable knowledge about running his own training operation, opening his own racing stable in 1978. Mott trained Cigar who was the highest money earner of all time until 2008 and tied the record for 16 straight wins during the1995 and 1996 racing seasons. He won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer in 1995 and 1996 and was honored with the Turf Publicists of America Big Sport of Turfdom Award in 1996. In 1998, Bill was inducted into the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame and reached the milestone of 4,000 career wins in 2010. In November 2010, he trained Unrivaled Belle to a Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic victory at Churchill Downs. He has won nine training titles at Saratoga, ten titles at Belmont Park, nine at Gulfstream Park, five titles at Keeneland and is the most victorious trainer of all time at Churchill Downs. Bill currently has a 100 horse stable that is based in New York and Kentucky. He won his first Triple Crown race with Drosselmeyer in the 2010 Belmont Stakes.
