Richard Mandella

Trainer

RICHARD MANDELLA was born in Altadena, Calif., on Nov. 5, 1950.  His father, Gene, was a farrier in Beaumont, Calif., and Richard got his start in horse racing through him.  He worked at Three Rings Ranch for three years and at Farrell Jones’ Riverside Ranch for one year.  He later became an assistant to trainer V. J. “Lefty” Nickerson.  Mandella went out on his own in 1974 as a private trainer for Roger Braugh and opened a public stable in 1976.

Pedigree

Indy Point's sire Indygo Shiner has a mouth-watering pedigree: he is by A.P. Indy out of Grade 3 winner Navarra, a full sister to Broodmare of the Year Toussaud (who is responsible for Empire Maker, 2000 Arlington Million hero Chester House, 2002 Secretariat victor Chiselling, Honest Lady). Indygo Shiner's career highlight was a narrow decision in the 2001 Jefferson Cup at Churchill Downs.

Exported to Argentina for stud duty, he is siring horses of a higher caliber than himself. His leading progeny include champion Tecla Shiner; Grade/Group 1 victress Miss Match, who added the 2011 Santa Margarita Invitational to her fine resume from Argentina; and fellow Group 1 winners Garatero and Mi Amiguito. Indygo Shiner has earned his way back to covering mares in Kentucky as a shuttle stallion. His top U.S.-bred runner is Amberjack, who will try to sweep the Big Apple Triple in the August 21 Albany at Saratoga.

Indy Point was produced by the Parade Marshal mare Red Point. Parade Marshal, a Caro half-brother to noted sire Buckaroo from the immediate family of sires Stop the Music and Hatchet Man, has sired several Argentinean champions as well as millionaire Star Parade, a three-time Grade 1 star in Southern California. Parade Marshal also appears as the broodmare sire of a number of Group 1 scorers, among them Maipo Royale, who garnered last October's Gran Premio San Isidro.

Indy Point hails from a female line that keeps churning out South American Group performers. Perhaps his most significant maternal relative is Refinado Tom, a former Argentinean Horse of the Year who romped in the 1997 Native Diver at Hollywood for none other than Richard Mandella -- Indy Point's own trainer.

Starter Analysis

Son of Indygo Shiner won three Grade One events in his native Argentina including the Argentine Derby last year and perhaps produced his best performance when closing fast to finish second in the prestigious twenty two runner Carlos Pellegrinni in his second try on grass and in his last start before joining the barn of Richard Mandella. Chestnut won the Wickerr Stakes at Del Mar last month in his one start for Mandella who wins with 20% of his runners second off a layoff and who saddled The Tin Man to win the 2006 Million. Four-year-old has shown some early speed and can be handily placed from the start under Gary Stevens who won the Million twice before and who was unlucky to not add a third when partnering Storming Home who was disqualified after passing the post first in 2003.
