Doug O'Neill began training in 1994 and has been a perennial leader on the southern California racing circuit. He is most widely recognized for his campaigning of 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I'll Have Another and the popular gelding Lava Man who he claimed for $50,000 and would go on to win over $5 million including grade 1 races on three different surfaces while capturing the hearts and interest of fans around the world.
Mario Gutierrez
Jockey
Mario Gutierrez has been the leading rider at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver Canada prior to moving his tack to Southern California for the winter. Troy Taylor, a top trainer at Hastings who Mario has been the primary jockey for, is racing a stable at Santa Anita currently and this precipitated the move for Gutierrez. Starter Analysis
California shipper has won two of his seven starts on grass including an optional claimer in his latest over eleven furlongs at Del Mar in late July after stalking the early pace. Son of Bellamy Road won over a mile and a half at Santa Anita this spring but had his limitations exposed when fifth in the Round Table Stakes over the same distance at Hollywood in his next start after setting the early pace. Four-year-old is from the barn of Doug O’Neill who wins with 12% of his runners in stakes races and gelding can be a pace factor with Mario Gutierrez aboard.
