Windy Hill Farm

Windy Hill Farm is the stable name of Peter Reiman and his son Peter Scott Reiman who are from Campbellsville, Ill.  The Reimans acquired Nates Mineshaft for a bargain $8,000 at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale from Bluewater Sales, agent.

True to his name, Nates Mineshaft is by 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft, the winner of seven stakes over the course of his championship season. The blue-blood son of A.P. Indy demolished the New Orleans Handicap and Ben Ali before stepping up to Grade 1 company, and proceeded to sweep the Pimlico Special, Suburban, Woodward and Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Mineshaft, a son of multiple Grade 1 heroine and Broodmare of the Year Prospectors Delite, and a full brother to multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Tomisue's Delight, has lived up to his pedigree at stud. His leading progeny include millionaire It's Tricky, queen of the 2011 Acorn and Coaching Club American Oaks as well as the 2012 Ogden Phipps; Dialed In, the 2011 Florida Derby victor; 2010 King's Bishop winner Discreetly Mine; and millionaire Fly Down, best remembered for his narrow losses in the 2010 Belmont Stakes and Travers.

Nates Mineshaft is closely related to the New Mexico stand-out Mr. Trieste, who is by another A.P. Indy stallion in Old Trieste and out of the same mare, multiple stakes winner and Grade 3-placed Angel's Tearlet. Mr. Trieste won eight black-type stakes, topped by the 2005 Zia Park Distance Championship and 2006 Sunland Park Handicaps, while bankrolling $605,474.

Angel's Tearlet scored her stakes victories in the 1998 Ballade at Woodbine and the 1999 Majorette Handicap at Louisiana Downs. An earner of $280,051, she also placed in 10 stakes, chief among them the 1998 Honorable Miss Handicap at Saratoga, and set a five-furlong track record at Lone Star Park.

Angel's Tearlet is by noted sire Silver Deputy, a son of the influential Deputy Minister. Silver Deputy has sired Hall of Famer Silverbulletday, a raft of Canadian champions, and up-and-coming sires Spring at Last and Badge of Silver. Daughters of Silver Deputy are responsible for reigning champion female sprinter Groupie Doll; Grade 1-winning half-brothers Roman Ruler and El Corredor; and Wiseman's Ferry, sire of reigning Horse of the Year Wise Dan.

Starter Analysis

Son of Mineshaft finished an excellent third, just three quarters of a length behind subsequent Horse of the Year Wise Dan in the Grade One Stephen Foster last year, and comes off a gate-to-wire victory over a mile here in his third start after an eleven month break in just his second career start on grass. Six-year-old comes into this fairly fresh and in top form for trainer Anne Smith and will likely be the one to set the pace with E T Baird remaining aboard but will probably face pressure from the start from Little Mike.
