Roger Brueggemann

Roger Brueggemann was born September 6, 1945 in Leesville, Louisiana. He worked for 30 years as a mechanic before becoming a horse trainer in the late 1980s. Coincidentally, his career as a mechanic ended because a horse rolled over on him and broke his hip. He came to Illinois in 1992 and spent a few years at Fairmount Park before coming to Chicago where he has been training ever since.

Florent Geroux

Florent, born in France in 1986, is the son of Dominique Geroux, who rode with success in France during the 70s and 80s before hanging up his tack to become a trainer. Although he spent time at the track as a youth, it wasn't until he was a teenager that he decided he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps. He applied to the French riding academy, Afasec, and he was accepted at the age of 13 and attended the school for several years.

Starter Analysis

Son of 16% grass sire English Channel has an admirable record of 10-7-1-1 on this course and comes off a gate-to-wire success in the Stars and Stripes Stakes over a mile and a half here last month in his second start of the year. Five-year-old is trained by Roger Brueggemann who wins with 28% of his runners third time off a layoff and with 26% of his starters that won their last outing. Bay has tactical speed and can be in good position tracking the likely pace set by the Californian invader and could get first run on some of the closers in the stretch with Florent Geroux remaining aboard.
