Frostad (born January 19, 1949 in Brantford, Ontario) grew up with a father who owned a stud farm but before becoming involved in thoroughbred horse racing, Frostad obtained a BA degree in literature from Princeton University then in 1976 an MBA degree from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.

Alex Solis was born on March 25, 1964, in Panama City, Panama. He attended a jockey school in his homeland and won his first race there in 1981. After arriving in the United States, Solis gained prominence when he won the 1986 Preakness (G1) aboard Snow Chief; he again made headlines in 1996 when he rode Dare and Go to upset Cigar in the Pacific Classic (G1), ending Cigar's 16-race winning streak.
