Peintre Celebre x Sarabande (Woodman)

Pedigree

Sudan (Ire) is by French highweight Peintre Celebre, who rates as one of the most dazzling winners of Europe's famed Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) in the past three decades. A son of the great Nureyev, Peintre Celebre swept to victory in the 1997 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) (Fr-G1) and Grand Prix de Paris (Fr-G1) before capping his career with a five-length triumph in the Arc. Predictably, his progeny have excelled in long-distance events on the turf. His leading performer, the marvelous mare Pride, was a multiple highweight who defeated males in Group 1 affairs in England, France and Hong Kong. But less predictably, Peintre Celebre has shown that he has a wider range too, siring the first-rate Australian sprinter Bentley Biscuit as well as Castledale (Ire), the winner of the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on dirt and the grassy Shoemaker Mile (G1).

Sudan was produced by the Woodman mare Sarabande, a winner in France. She is herself out of Special Happening (Relaunch), who captured the 1989 Alcibiades S. (G2) on the dirt. This is the family of Irish co-champion miler Prince of Birds (Storm Bird), victor of the 1988 Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1).
