Peyote Patty Wins Virginia Tarra Illinois Owners Stakes
Timothy Keely's Peyote Patty captured her fifth straight race when making her turf debut in the $100,000 Virginia H. Tarra Illinois Owners Stakes, the closing day feature at Arlington Park. Tim Thornton rode the Steve Fridley-trained daughter of Cactus Ridge who covered the mile and a sixteenth over a turf course rated "good" in 1:44.94.
"Every time we put her to a new test, she's proven to us she can do it," Thornton said. "Last time was the first time she went long and she broke a little slow, dropped back and came on to win easily. Sprinting she was always right there, so we weren't sure what to expect today. I thought we'd be on an easy lead but the horse on the inside of me (Positivelycharming) wouldn't go away and kept testing me, but like the mature horse she is she gave herself a break on the turn and when I asked her, she went on."
The victory in the Illinois Owners Stakes was her first in added-money competition and the $58,800 winner's share pushed her earnings to $162,980.
Chantilly Lady rallied to finish second in the seven-horse field, 1 ¾ lengths short of the winner but a neck clear of third-place runner Never Retreat.
"She closed well late but the horse in front just kept going," said Inez Karlsson, who rode the runner-up.
Sun for Fun, favored Closeout, Positivelycharming and Royal Thumb Tack completed the order of finish.
"(I had) no problems but the horse just didn't fire," said jockey Robby Albarado, who rode the beaten favorite.
Overlooked by the crowd and sent off at odds of more than 12-1, Peyote Patty paid $27. $10.20 and $5.40. Chantilly Lady returned $14.20 and $7. Never Retreat paid $4.
