Arlington Million

Wayne Catalano

Wayne Catalano was born July 24, 1956 in New Orelans, La.  Wayne won 1,792 races as a jockey before chronic knee problems forced him to hang up his tack. Was the nation's secondleading rider in 1977. Served as an assistant under Hall-of-Fame conditioner Jack Van Berg for a time and began training on his own in 1983, recording his first victory that same year with Dreamin' Of You at Arlington. Wayne has earned training crowns at Sportsman's Park in 1988 and 1989 and at Hawthorne in 1987, 1989 and 2004.

Wayne lead all trainers with 37 victories to claim his first-ever Arlington training crown in 2000. Earned his second title in 2002, setting a single season record of 64 victories in the process. Wayne narrowly missed equaling his record setting 2002 run, saddling 59
winners in 2003 to easily pick up his third training title in four years. He broke his record in 2005 when he sent out 69 winners. Wayne saddled Dreaming of Anna to win the Grade I Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies in 2006. In 2007, Wayne bettered his own single-season record to 74 wins. He picked up another Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies victory with She Be Wild in 2009. She went on to win the Eclipse as champion 2-year-old filly. Wayne saddled his 2,000th winner on February 24, 2010 at Hawthorne with
Dunscombe. Out on his own after parting ways with longtime client Frank Calabrese, Wayne took what was supposed to be a rebuilding year in 2009 and turned it into his eighth Arlington title. He added a ninth title in 2010 with a record 75 wins. In 2011, he trained Stephanie's Kitten to win the Grade II Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs.
