ARLINGTON’S ALL-TIME LEADING FEMALE RIDER NOW A MOTHER
In May of 2009, jockey Inez Karlsson became the first female rider in Arlington history to ride five winners on a single program. In June of that year, the Swedish-born jockey became Arlington’s all-time leading female rider, but on July 25 of 2011, Karlsson outdid those accomplishments by delivering a baby daughter.
Sophia Rose Calcagno came into the world last Monday tacking six pounds, 14 ounces and was 20 inches long. Coincidentally, she was born on the same day that Karlsson’s former agent Penny Ffitch-Heyes delivered her own recently-celebrated daughter Bella four years earlier. In fact, Karlsson had attended a birthday party for Bella on Sunday evening.
Ffitch-Heyes, in the meantime, is serving as the agent for Arlington’s current leading rider J. Z. Santana, as well as current fourth-place reinsman E. T. Baird.
DEFENDING TRAINER CHAMP ‘CAT’ SADDLES SUNDAY BIRTHDAY DOUBLE
Conditioner Wayne Catalano, Arlington’s defending trainer champion of the last six years, celebrated his 55th birthday last Sunday by saddling two winners on the program.
The two-win day moved Catalano into a tie with Chris Block for third-place in the trainer standings entering Thursday’s racing day, five wins off the pace of Arlington’s current leading trainer Scott Becker.
Catalano posed in the winner’s circle with Charles Galli’s Capt. Bullet Bob after Sunday’s second race and returned after Sunday’s fourth race with Mike Anderson Thoroughbreds’ 2-year-old filly first time starter Awesome Gisel. Both of Catalano’s winners were ridden by Seth Martinez.
In addition to his six straight local titles, Catalano has been Arlington’s trainer champion nine of the last 11 years and was also the nation’s second leading rider behind Eclipse Award-winning rider Steve Cauthen in 1977.
Last year, Catalano enjoyed a record-setting Arlington season by saddling 75 winners to better his own mark by one.
‘GIRLS DAY OUT’ RED CARPET GATHERING SATURDAY
Ladies interested in an exclusive red carpet event to enhance Saturday’s “Girls Day Out” theme at Arlington Park might be interested in the new “Girls’ Day Out” package that will be offered in the International Room, with tickets still available at arlingtonpark.com.
With floor-to-ceiling windows, ladies will stay cool inside while watching the horses throughout the afternoon. Also, guests purchasing this package will learn about the latest makeup and fashion trends, get miniature spa treatments, and walk away with some great freebies – all while enjoying special libations and summer savories with sweet treats.
The International Room package is designed to promise the ladies a fun-filled day of fashion, pampering, shopping and festivities, but will also offer racing tips during the afternoon’s racing program.
Last but not least, every girl who purchases the International Room package is invited to enter to win the Grand Prize, where one lucky lady will receive a $2,000 personal shopping experience from every girl’s favorite luxury 5th Avenue jeweler courtesy of Arlington Park.
Also, all ladies attending Saturday’s “Girls’ Day Out” get the chance to put on their favorite summer dress, pull out their favorite fashion hat and enter the Fashion Hat Contest, and sip on a specialty “Girls’ Day Out” cocktail during the afternoon.
“Prom Band” will be the featured band in the Park Area Saturday, giving all the ladies a chance to reminisce about old times with songs from the ‘70s to the present.
