Nine 3-Year-Old Fillies Vie in Purple Violet Stakes
State-bred 3-year-old fillies take the spotlight on Saturday, June 7, at Arlington International Racecourse in the $100,000 Purple Violet Stakes with last year’s Illinois Reserve Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Richies Sweetheart and stakes winners Pistols Drawn and Lakotadreamcatcher prominent among the nine entrants.
In addition to the one-mile Polytrack race as the local headliner on the 11-race card, Arlington will also offer wagering on the Grade I Belmont Stakes from New York where Steve Colburn and Perry Martin’s California Chrome will attempt to become the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years.
Asiel Stable’s Pistols Dawn seeks her third straight win and second in state-bred stakes company in the Purple Violet. The daughter of First Defence was an easy victress in the $100,000 Pretty Jenny Stakes at Hawthorne after having previously annexed an allowance race at the southside oval. Trained by Carlos Silva, who won this race as a jockey in 1993 aboard Your Ladyship, Pistols Dawn will be guided by her regular jockey Rafael Hernandez.
Though only the winner of a single race, Lakota Stable’s Lakotadreamcatcher made the most of it by breaking her maiden against winners in the $125,000 Pat Whitworth Illinois Breeders’ Debutante at Hawthorne last December. In three starts as a 3-year-old, the Dee Poulos charge has been better of later posting a pair of fourth-place finishes in her two most recent efforts. Eduardo Perez has been named to ride the daughter of Illinois champion Fort Prado.
Trainer Donnie K. Von Hemel ships in Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch’s Cabana in from Churchill Downs where the daughter of Flatter ran second in an open company allowance race in her last start. The Purple Violet will be her first start in state-bred restricted company as well as her local debut. Chris Emigh picks up the mount.
Richard Ravin, Patricia’s Hope LLC and Larry Rivelli’s Richies Sweetheart, who broke her maiden here as a 2-year-old, is looking for her third win in four tries over the Arlington Polytrack. The daughter of Bring the Heat cruised to a 6½-length tally over older state-bred rivals last time out. Tim Thornton has been named to ride by Rivelli.
Mary Elizabeth Rainwater’s Brazyn Appeal was runner-up to Pistols Drawn in the Pretty Jenny last time after having broken her maiden at Hawthorne in her previous effort. Edgar Perez will ride the Bradlee Rainwater-trained daughter of Closing Argument.
Completing the field for the Purple Violet (with jockeys) are: Ron Magers and Bob Marcocchio’s Bellarada (Sheldon Russell); John Carver’s Countess Cashmere (C. H. Marquez Jr.); Bradlee Rainwater’s Gabio (Rosemary Homeister Jr.); and Tom Lauritsen’s Sunshine Caris (Emmanuel Esquivel).
