Two-Year-Olds Spotlighted Saturday for the Grade III Arlington-Washington Lassie & the Grade III Arlington-Washington Futurity
An overflow field of 14 juvenile fillies including stakes winners Sweet Redemption, American Sugar and Gold Edge passed the entry box for Saturday's Grade III $150,000 Arlington-Washington Lassie while the stakes winning Muppet Man headlines a field of eight 2-year-olds for its companion race the Grade III $150,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity. Each race will be run at the one-turn mile distance over Arlington's Polytrack.
Southern Chase Farm's Sweet Redemption broker her maiden in her lone trip to the post when closing to get up in the waning strides of the $150,000 Ontario Debutante over Polytrack at Woodbine Race Course. The daughter of D'wildcat is trained by Greg de Gannes and will be ridden by Alex Solis.
Gold Edge, who races in the colors of Dolphus Morrison and is trained by Lon Wiggins, sports a perfect record that includes a five-furlong maiden tally at Churchill Downs on June 24 and Arlington's $65,000 Lisa M Stakes when stretching out to seven panels on Aug. 4. Chris Emigh rides the daughter of Eddington.
Poindexter Thoroughbreds' American Sugar has already made four trips postward in her young career, winning twice including a score in the $75,000 Prairie Gold Lassie at six furlongs at Prairie Meadows on July 21. Three weeks later, the Hugh Roberston-trained daughter of Harlan's Holiday ran third in the $60,000 Prairie Meadows Juvenile Mile around two turns at that Altoona, Iowa oval. Seth Martinez picks up the mount.
In addition, four stakes-placed fillies are slated to start Saturday – Asiel Stable's Bridgette Bordeaux; Paul Schaffer's Dancing Elliebelle; Sheltowee Farm & Blazing Meadow Farm's Love Me Good; and Rob Auerbach & Marc Winston's Quiet Success.
Of that quartet, Quiet Success brings the most impressive credentials with a runner-up finish in both the Grade III Debutante at Churchill Downs in June and the Prairie Gold Lassie the following month. James Graham picks up the mount aboard the Tom Amoss-trained daughter of Successful Appeal.
The Tim Hamm-trained Love Me Good was fourth in Churchill's Debutante and later ran third in the $50,000 Our Mims at Delaware Park. The daughter of Jazil will have the services of Arlington's leading rider Francisco Torres.
Dancing Elliebelle, who was third in the Prairie Gold Lassie, beat male rivals in allowance company at Canterbury Park last out. Tanner Riggs, fresh off his leading rider title at that Minnesota oval, rides the Pure Prize filly for trainer Bobby Springer.
Bridgette Bordeaux, a winner at first asking for trainer Carlos Silva, most recently was third in the Lisa M. Robby Albarado has been named to ride the Illinois-bred daughter of Medaglia d'Oro.
Others in the field for Lassie include: Jean & Ted Barlas and Mike Porcaro's Bethany Belle (Diego Sanchez); Adele Dilschneider's Custody (Garrett Gomez); Bret Jones' Dancinginthecircle (Rosemary Homeister Jr.); Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Flying Rapunzel (Miguel Mena); Darrell & Evelyn Yates' La Song (Jeffrey Sanchez); Travis Morgeson's Pappascat (Jon Court); Richard Perkins & Hinsley Racing Stable's You Bought Her (Julio Felix).
Curtis Green's Muppet Man brings a two-for-two record into the Futurity after breaking his maiden here July 1 and returning a month later to impressively capture the $65,000 Meadowlake Stakes on Aug. 4. Trained by Jimmy DiVito, whose success with young horses over the last few seasons is nothing short of phenomenal, the Corinthian colt will be partnered once again with Jeffrey Sanchez.
Northwind Thoroughbreds' Stormin Monarcho and Mast Thoroughbreds' Urban Renewal each have a stakes placing on their respective ledgers. The former, a Joel Berndt-trained son of Monarchos, was third in the Meadowlake and was beaten only a length when finishing fourth in the $75,000 Prairie Gold Juvenile in Iowa. The latter, by City Zip and trained by Bob Gorham, ran second in the restricted $50,000 Hoover Stakes at Cincinnati's River Downs. Seth Martinez has the call aboard Stormin Monarcho and Francisco Torres is slated to ride Urban Renewal.
Mark Dedominico & North American Thoroughbred Racing Comp's Glenco Kid has the advantage of having broken his maiden at the one-turn mile distance of the Futurity. Tim Thornton, who was aboard for that score, has a return call astride the Mike Reavis-trained son of Repent.
Gold Mark Farm's Mylute and Swifty Farms' Pataky Kid both enter off maiden wins over Arlington's Polytrack. The former, a Tom Amoss-trained son of Midnight Lute, was an easy winner going six furlongs on Aug. 11 while the latter, by Rockport Harbor and trained by Tom Proctor, rallied to win going seven-eighths of a mile two days previous. James Graham has the call aboard Mylute with Garrett Gomez slated to ride Pataky Kid.
Illinois-bred Ultimo Trago, fourth in the Meadowlake last time out, broke his maiden in restricted company in his previous start on July 8. Constantino Roman rides the son of Pure Prize for trainer Brian Williamson.
Completing the field for the Futurity is Robert Zoellner's Scissortail G, a Donnie Von Hemel-trained filly. The maiden daughter of Value Plus takes on the boys here as she would have been excluded from the overfilled Lassie. Channing Hill has the call.
